Extracurriculars/Initiatives

Odyssey of the Mind – O-M is an international group problem solving activity. Groups begin working on a theme in mid to late fall and prepare for a regional competition in Mid-March. Teams meet weekly and are coached by parent volunteers. Teams may advance to state and international levels of competition.
Ski Club – The SJE Ski Club is organized by our PTG. At a very reasonable rate, children and their families ski Sunday afternoons – this includes a lesson as well as a ski pass.
National Geographic Geography Bee –The twenty to thirty 4th, 5th and 6th graders interested students compete for ten spots in our school contest. The winning student takes an online test to determine their involvement in the national bee.
Scripps National Spelling Bee – Classroom Spelling Bees (grades1st – 6th) determine two students from each class who will compete in our building wide Spelling Bee. The two finalist move to the regional level in Corning, NY. All activities related to the Spelling Bee are very specific. All preparations are organized by Mrs. Mary Terela.
Poetry Recitation –Under the guidance of Ms. Savage the children participate (grades1st – 6th) in classroom recitations. Two students from each class move on to a building wide recitation held in March. School representatives from SJE participate in the county wide recitation held in April.
Science Fair – Mrs. Anu Rai coordinates our building Science Fair which is held in February. Projects are judged by BAE Engineers. Projects are selected to move on to the county wide Science Fair held in March at SUNY Broome.
Intramurals – Each Thursday after school, teachers organize large team athletic competitions for our 4th, 5th and 6th graders. The hour long activity is attended by 90 percent of our students. They begin in September and continue through June.
Mathalon – Beginning in the summer Mrs. Anu Rai works with selected sixth graders for the Mathalon Competition. Mathalon is a group computation and problem solving math competition. The team has six members. The competition is held on the first Saturday in December and is judged by employees from Lockheed Martin. During the school year the children meet weekly during lunch and recess.

Choir – Mr. Matt Vavalle, our music teacher, directs our choir. Participation in our choir is event specific. Various students lead us in our liturgies, Christmas concert and Catholic Schools Week celebrations.

Lunch with the Saints – Student Athletes from SCC visit St. John the Evangelist on Friday’s during lunch.  They represent all varsity teams. Our visiting Saints eat lunch and enjoy recess time with the children.
Career Day – Children in grades 4th, 5th and 6th have an opportunity to listen and ask questions from a variety of professionals. Mrs. Anu Rai invites guest speakers and arranges the schedule for students. Students rotate through four, forty minute presentations.
Ethnic Day – Children in grades K – 6 have the opportunity to have visitors from a variety of countries visit their classrooms to share customs, ethnic foods, dances and other customs.
Golf Club – Our Club is organized by our PTG. Children receive instruction and an opportunity to play at the Hiawatha Links Course at a very reasonable price.
Other activities include PI Day, Invention Convention, Cornell Cooperative Nutritional Program and Good Manners Club.
