The Impact Of Giving

The Catholic Schools of Broome County (CSBC) surround its students with exemplary teachers and role models who inspire and challenge them. Through the generous support of parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends, the Catholic Schools of Broome County Foundation (CSBCF) is able to fulfill its mission to provide financial support to the CSBC.
Tuition-alone-left-img

Tuition alone does not cover the full expense of a CSBC education, nor does it provide the substantial funds needed for financial aid, capital improvements and faculty professional growth. Donations to the Annual Fund or other areas of support help to ensure that the CSBCF can provide top-notch opportunities and resources to the students and programs in the CSBC.

The CSBCF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. All gifts to the Foundation are tax-deductible as allowable by law. For more information, please contact the Foundation at 607.348.0337.

About

The Foundation

border-shape-img

A History of Service

The Catholic Schools of Broome County Foundation was originally incorporated in 1975 to ensure the sustainability of Catholic schools by raising, managing and directing funding for the schools’ exclusive use. The Foundation was restructured in 2005 to better focus on the current needs of the schools and to fulfill its mission.

Ample Size, Prudently Managed

Since 2005, the Foundation has received significant donations and has distributed over $ 3.25 million to the Catholic Schools of Broome County. Foundation funds are well managed, using a combination of equity and fixed-income vehicles. The rate of return since 2005 has averaged 7.7%.

Investment Options

Foundation members have experience in all forms of giving, ranging from unrestrictive giving, endowments and estate planning. Capital efforts are a sustaining priority.

Foundation Board Composition

The directors of the Foundation come from diverse backgrounds and have a passionate commitment to the Catholic Schools. Directors volunteer their time to attend to the Foundation’s strategic planning and to the operational decisions to see funds are raised, managed and directed for the schools’ benefit. Many members include but are not limited to parents of present or past students of the Catholic Schools.

Areas Of Support

border-shape-img

The Catholic Schools of Broome County Foundation offers a robust giving program with many options to meet the donor’s interests.

Of utmost importance to the CSBCF is the Annual Fund, which fills the funding gap between tuition revenue and the CSBC’s high priority needs for the teachers, students and programs that make the CSBC distinctive. Emphasizing the importance of the Annual Fund in supporting the schools’ core programs, the CSBCF asks the Saints community to give their Annual Fund gift first before supporting the other CSBC giving opportunities described in this section.
Areas Of Support right img

Annual Fund

The Saints Fund is the CSBCF’s Annual Fund. The cost to educate a student far exceeds the cost of tuition. These gifts are raised and spent in the current fiscal year and help to close this gap. Your support helps to provide tuition assistance, programming, faculty and staff support and much more.

For more information about the annual fund contact the Office of Alumni and Development at 607.348.0337.

Reunion Giving

Reunions in the CSBC are occasions for celebration and remembrance. They affirm that the CSBC experience lasts for a lifetime, and while buildings may change, the values of the CSBC remain constant. Bringing classmates back together helps connect alumni to their philanthropic passions and inspires many to give a gift that enhances the learning opportunities of the CSBC.

Reunion Class Gift

The Reunion Class Gift celebrates the entirety of each class’ philanthropy to the CSBC during their respective milestone year. Although the fiscal year ends on June 30, we encourage our reunion year alumni to make their contributions before the Reunion celebration. The Reunion Class Gift includes the following:

  • All Dollars-The celebration of all contributions to the CSBCF received in the current fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) allows classmates to support the school of their choice.
  • All Multi-Year Commitments- A five-year pledge is a popular option for alumni who know they will continue to support the CSBC each year. Multi-year commitments allow the CSBCF to anticipate future funding and save resources on solicitations to our alumni.
  • Newly Documented Planned Gifts (beginning at the 40th Reunion– For alumni who include the CSBCF in their will, name the Foundation as a beneficiary of their life insurance or retirement plan, or set up a gift annuity or charitable trust for the CSBC, any good faith estimates of future support for the CSBC that has been documented since their last reunion will be celebrated. For the 50th Reunion, all documented planned gifts will be included.

Reunion Class Goals

Each reunion committee establishes goals in honor of their milestone celebration.

Stocks and Securities

A memorial gift or gift in honor is an appropriate way to remember a special person while at the same time helping others. After you have made your contribution in memory or in honor, an acknowledgment letter or email will be sent to the person(s) you designate and a tax receipt will be sent to you. We do not specify the amount of the donation unless you request it.

IN HONOR
Wondering what to give the person who has everything? Celebrate your spouse’s birthday, parents’ anniversary, friend’s wedding or retirement with an alternative gift to the Catholic Schools of Broome County Foundation in their honor.

MEMORIAL GIFT
A memorial gift is a beautiful testament to the life of a beloved family member or friend who has passed on. It can be just the right way for expressing compassion to someone who has had a loss.

Matching Gifts

As a benefit to employees and to encourage giving, many companies match donations made by their employees — doubling or even tripling their gifts. To find out whether your employer will match your gift please consult your employer. Please inform the Catholic Schools of Broome County Foundation (CSBCF) of your matching intentions when you submit your gift. For questions or assistance, contact the Office of Development at 607.348.0337 or csbcalumni@syrdiocese.org.

Checks / Cash / Credit Cards

CHECKS
Checks should be made payable to the Catholic Schools of Broome County Foundation (CSBCF) and sent to:

CSBC Foundation
70 Seminary Avenue
Binghamton, NY 13905

Please be sure to provide your address and contact information, and include a note if it is a pledge payment or if there are specific details about the gift.

CASH
Gifts of cash can be given in person to a member of the Development Staff.

CREDIT CARDS
The CSBCF accepts most major credit cards including American Express, MasterCard, Visa and Discover.  To give via credit card, please visit our online giving form or call 607.348.0337 and ask to speak with any member of the Development Staff.

Stocks and Securities

Giving a gift of publicly-traded stock that increased in value and that you have owned for more than one year may provide a better tax benefit than giving cash. Your tax deduction is equal to the fair market value of the stock and you avoid paying the capital gains tax on any increase in the current value over the original cost of the stock.

These gifts can be donated via registered mail, electronic transfer or in person at the CSBCF Office by submitting the CSBCF Stock Donation form.  For more information contact Jeannie Post, Director of Events and Alumni Relations at 607.348.0337 or jpost@syrdiocese.org.

Tax Year-End Guidelines

School offices will be open until 4 p.m. on Dec. 30 (unless it falls on a weekend). If you wish to make a year-end gift, please use the following guidelines:

Checks: Checks must be postmarked or delivered to the Foundation Office on or before Dec. 31 to qualify for a year-end deduction.

Visa or MasterCard: The gift date is recorded as the date on which the charge is made to your credit card, not the date you give your credit card number to the Foundation. Credit card gifts can be immediately processed at CSBCF’s secure online automated giving page. Credit card gifts made via mail should be received by Dec. 29 so the school has time to process the transaction.

Stock (direct transfers): The gift date is recorded as the date on which the stock is transferred into the CSBCF’s gift account, not the date on which you advise your broker to make the gift. Please request the transfer and notify the Development Office no later than Dec. 20. It often takes a few days to verify transfers, particularly during the holidays, and we want to make sure your transfer is completed before we close on Dec. 30.

For more information or to make your gift, please contact the Development Office at 607.348.0337 or jpost@syrdiocese.org or visit our secure online giving page.

Retirement Accounts

Retirement accounts are an excellent source of charitable funds for individuals who have reached 70 ½ years of age and beyond. A portion or all of the mandatory withdrawal can be given directly to the CSBCF and not included as taxable income for the donor. For more information, please contact Director of Events and Alumni Relations, Jeannie Post at 607.348.0337.

Payroll Deduction

Your gift as a member of the CSBC faculty and staff is especially meaningful. When each of us gives back—at any level—we help the CSBC move forward in its mission. To make your gift via payroll deduction, please complete the online Payroll Deduction Form. For more information, or to cancel or edit your existing payroll deduction, please contact the Office of Development at 607.348.0337

Other Assets

In addition to the many ways to give outlined in this section, the CSBCF accepts donations in the form of other assets. These can include gifts of tangible personal property related to the CSBC’s educational purpose, or real estate. For more information, please contact Jeannie Post, Director of Events and Alumni Relations at 607.348.0337 or jpost@syrdiocese.org.

Planned Giving

border-shape-img
A thoughtful planned gift helps ensure the Catholic Schools of Broome County can continue to prepare our young men and women not only for college, but for life. A “planned gift” is a gift given to a charity through a will, contract or trust. It is often deferred and usually spread out over an extended period of time. Planned giving strategies, which should be discussed with professional counsel, may include; bequests, gift annuities, gifts of appreciated securities, life insurance, rollovers from retirement accounts, and various trust arrangements.
  • BequestsProviding for the CSBC through one’s will is a personal statement of support and appreciation and a generous means to sustain our schools into the future. A bequest provides a donor the flexibility to commit to future support with no impact on current income. And bequests can be structured to fit individual, family and financial needs.
  • Charitable Gift AnnuityIn exchange for a gift of cash or securities, the CSBC promises to pay the donor and – if the donor stipulates – another annuitant, a fixed sum each year for life, based on age. In most cases, part of each payment is tax-free, increasing the after-tax value.
  • Appreciated SecuritiesDonors who own securities that have appreciated in value may prefer to contribute securities rather than cash, thus avoiding capital gains tax while allowing a tax deduction for the current fair market value.
  • Life InsuranceDonors with life insurance policies they no longer need may consider naming the Catholic Schools of Broome County as the owner and beneficiary, creating an immediate tax deduction for the accumulated cash value of the policy and a future deduction for any subsequent premiums the donor pays.
  • Retirement Plan AssetsRetirement plan assets may be directed to support the Catholic Schools of Broome County at a donor’s death. Plan administrators can provide the necessary change-of-beneficiary form. For donors over the age of 70½, there may also be tax advantages to having minimum distributions from some retirement accounts assigned directly to the CSBC.
  • Charitable TrustsVarious charitable trust arrangements are available that can provide significant support for the CSBC while also securing the financial future and reducing taxes for donors and their heirs.

For more information or to discuss planned giving arrangements please contact Jeannie Post, Director of Events and Alumni Relations 607.348.0337 or jpost@syrdiocese.org.
