Our Mission

SCC – Our Mission

The Catholic-based learning environment at Seton Catholic Central is inspired by our ever-present teacher, Jesus Christ. Our students are encouraged to develop a love of learning, which will serve them throughout their lives. Our mission is to meet each student’s needs – spiritual, academic and emotional – through a fiscally responsible program that recognizes the importance of stewardship in all its forms.

Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Syracuse –
Mission Statement 2025

Inspired by the evangelizing mission of Jesus Christ, the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Syracuse partner with families, communities, and parishes to nurture academic excellence rooted in Gospel values. We empower students to develop a strong moral conscience informed by the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, and to live their faith with compassion, integrity, and respect for all life. Preparing them for a diverse world, we cultivate lifelong learners who are witnesses to Christ’s love through service to others.

Code of Conduct

Spiritual unity is evident in the celebration of the Eucharist. The SCC community pray together at the start of each day, in classes, on retreats, and in the school chapel. These activities promote an attitude of respect and concern for one another. SCC strives to create an environment that is structured and conducive to learning. Our rules are based on Christian values and beliefs. The rules are established to protect the academic and philosophical mission of Seton Catholic Central and, therefore, must be obeyed and supported.

Health

Annual Medical Examination – The New York State Education Law requires a physical for each new student and all 10th grade students. Parents have the option of using their family physician or the school’s physician. A sports physical is also acceptable. If the physical exam form is not turned in by October 1st, a school physical will be scheduled. Physical exam forms are available in the Health Office. The school should be notified of any known student health problems or any changes in information previously submitted. Scoliosis screenings will be done annually for students under the age of 17 who have not had a physical. Vision screenings are performed on students annually. Hearing screenings are performed on all 10th grade students.

Administration of Medicine If a student must take any medication during school hours, the school will require:

  1. A written request from the parent/guardian.
  2. The written order of the prescribing physician indicating the name, purpose and dosage requirements of the medication.
  3. The appropriate form requesting medications to be given in school can be obtained in the Health Office. It is acceptable for the physician to write the medication order on their prescription sheet instead.
  4. All medication is to be dropped off and picked up by the parent/guardian at the beginning and end of the prescription period.
  5. All medication must be in the original container. Ask your pharmacist for a double label for the school time doses.

Dress Code

SCC views the Dress Code as an integral part of the disciplinary training. A personal sense of pride and worth are key to success at SCC. The dress code is in effect throughout the day. Having uniforms/a dress code better prepares students for the work force.

School History

“Be it known to all who enter here that Christ is the reason for this school. He is the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes. He is the model of its faculty and the inspiration of its students.”

Seton Catholic Central was built in 1962 at 70 Seminary Ave in Binghamton, NY and opened as Catholic Central High School in 1963. When the school opened as Seton Catholic Central High School in 1976, it housed students from both Catholic Central High School in Binghamton, NY and Seton Catholic High School in Endicott, NY. The schools had to merge because of declining enrollments and a deficit. The Sisters of Charity, who staffed Seton, and the Sisters of St. Joseph, who manned Catholic Central, were moved to the new school to be the main part of the faculty with Reverend VanAmburgh as the principal. The tuition at the time of the merger was $500 per student (it had increased $50 more than the tuition at the two high schools), with a maximum of $950 per family.

The class of 1977 was the first graduating class from Seton Catholic Central and had 281 members in it. Classes included math, science, English, foreign language (including Spanish), physical education, social studies, and business. Popular activities for students included chorus, newspaper, ski club, Marian Association, key club, mission club, pep club, bowling, and basketball.

The building has two floors and a basement with 39 classrooms, including the band room, chorus room, computer lab, science labs and art room. The gymnasium has been used for various sporting events, including basketball, musicals and plays (featured on the stage), graduations, masses, assemblies, and other events. The building also has a chapel near the gym that is used for daily masses and is also used by religion classes during the school day. Within the building there is also a library with computers that is used for studying, the Saintly Grounds afterschool café, and a main office.

In 2011, Seton Catholic Central High School became Seton Catholic Central when it opened its doors to students in 7th and 8th grades. Today Seton Catholic Central has students in grades 7- 12 and has approximately 355 students, with Mr. Peter Stewart as the principal. The school offers many class options for all learning levels, as well as many sports and activities for all students. Students from all over the Binghamton area attend the school, as well as international students from places such as Ukraine, Africa, and Asia.

Admission to Catholic Schools of Broome County is the first step on a journey toward personal success.
