ROBOTICS CLUB
Welcome to the website of the Seton Catholic Central Robotics Club! The Robotics Club was started by Mrs. Diana Simpson. We meet in Room 210, next to the art room every Monday and Wednesday (and Tuesday during competition season) from 3 pm to 5 pm, and we are always accepting new members
We participate in the FIRST Tech Challenge, during which teams design, build, and code robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform, powered by Android technology, and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. For more information about the FIRST Tech Challenge, click here.
We also compete in the SUNY Broome Robotics Competition, a local competition held by SUNY Broome in which we use both LEGOS and metal parts to build robots that compete against local high schools.
EVENTS
The SUNY Broome Robotics Competition will be held this year! It will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at SUNY Broome.
We are also part of the First Tech Challenge NY Excelsior Region. The events happening in our region are as follows:
NY Excelsior Region Qualifying Tournaments:
- Sunday, December 5, 2021 – Finger Lakes Qualifier @ Penfield High School, Penfield, NY
- January 2-8, 2022 – REMOTE Qualifier
- Saturday, January 15, 2022 – Peekskill Qualifier @ Peekskill High School, Peekskill, NY*
- Sunday, January 16, 2022 – Corning Qualifier @ Corning-Painted Post High School, Corning, NY
- Sunday, January 30, 2022 – MVCC/Utica Qualifier @ Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica, NY*
- Sunday, February 6, 2022 – Albany Area Qualifier @ Broadalbin-Perth High School, Broadalbin, NY
- Saturday, February 12, 2022 – Clarkson Qualifier @ Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY
A qualifying tournament is hosted and managed by a FIRST Tech Challenge program delivery partner or a program delivery partner appointed host. The number of teams advancing to the state/regional championship tournament depends on the capacity of the state/regional championship tournament, the number of qualifying tournaments, and the number of teams attending the qualifying tournament. If a team wins a qualifying tournament, they advance to the NY Excelsior Region Championship Tournament.
*We are registered for these events
NY Excelsior Regional Championship Tournament:
- Sunday, March 6, 2022 @ Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica, NY
A championship tournament is hosted and managed by a FIRST Tech Challenge program delivery partner. Championship tournaments uphold certain standards in format, judging, awards, and overall quality. Championship tournaments may include teams from a geographic region, province, state, country, or several countries. Teams should expect a higher level of competition, both on the field and in the judging room at championship tournaments. If a team wins a championship tournament, they advance to the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship in Houston, Texas in late April.
The NY Excelsior Region’s FIRST Tech Challenge competitions are run by Mohawk Community College, the FIRST Tech Challenge program delivery partner for the NY Excelsior region. You can find more information about them here.
Scores from all official tournaments are posted on FIRST’s website here. We are team# 6454.
Masks are required for all events and full vaccination is required for some (students will be notified of these events)

MEET THE TEAM
Coach Diana Simpson – Head Coach
Coach Simpson started coaching Robotics when a group of Freshmen asked about the FIRST Tech Challenge competition many years ago. That group has long since graduated, but our Robotics team continues with new members each year. Interactions with the students outside of the normal classroom are fun and bringing the joy of science and the ability to “think outside of the box” makes it all worthwhile. In her other life, she teaches high school and college Chemistry, Environmental and Engineering courses.
Coach Nate Rogers – Programming and Construction Coach
Coach Rogers has been involved with Seton Robotics for the past six years. He has helped to create dozens of robots for FTC competitions and other local robotics competitions. He enjoys teaching, building robots, problem-solving, and teaching young engineers how to “think outside of the box”. By day he is a senior software engineer and consultant working for companies ranging from the gaming world to the medical industry.
Caden Eldred – Builder
This is my 5th year of robotics at SCCHS, and this is my first time attending FTC. At home, I do graphic designing and painting for hobbies. I also am an animal photographer and hiker. I enjoy building and constructing things. I’m planning on going to college to be an architect or a mechanical engineer. I am Catholic and I go to OLS church and have been on multiple trips to NYC, Washington DC, and Niagara Falls with them.
Caleb Woodley-Dickinson – Backup Driver
This is my sixth year in the robotics club at Seton Catholic Central and I have built a robot for local competitions each year. In my spare time, I enjoy playing video games and building legos.
Collin Wickizer – Primary Driver, Builder
I am 17 and a long-term 5-year member of Saints Robotics. This is my 4th year competing and participating in FIRST Robotics in New York. In my personal life, I am an acolyte for the Owego United Methodist Church, and before COVID-19 a volunteer for Kopernic Observatory. Some of my proudest moments and achievements have been giving a speech in front of 1,600 people and having the opportunity to hold a Moon Rock encased in glass. In the future, I plan on going to college and making a career in the engineering field.
Matthew Searles – Engineering Portfolio, Driver
This is my 3rd year of FIRST robotics, as well as 3rd of FTC. I am an altar server at my church. I have been at Catholic schools for 6 years, and the subjects I like are science, math, and english. I have gone to the Finger Lakes with my family multiple times. In my spare time, I read, play video games with my friends, and spend time with my family.
Michael Young – Builder
This is my 1st year of FIRST robotics, and 1st of FTC. I am a Pokemon fanatic and qualified for Champions League. I’ve always been in school and my favorite subjects are gym, english, and robotics. Some things I like to do are play video games, sports like baseball, basketball, and football, and hang out with friends.
Lincoln Lin – Programmer
This is my third year in Seton Robotics and the second year of FTC. I am a foreign exchange student from China and have been studying in the U.S. for 4 years. I love math, science, and, mostly, programming and love to utilize my knowledge in engineering. In my spare time, I mostly play video games or talk to my friends on the internet
Vincent Arlequin – Secretary, Programmer, and Website Designer
This is my fourth year in both the Seton Robotics Club and the First Tech Challenge. I have gone to Catholic School all my life. My favorite subjects in school are Algebra 2, Global 2, Regents Chemistry, and AP Computer Science Principles. Some things that I like to do in my spare time are video production and watch YouTube videos.
